What are Eating Disorders?

Eating disorders are serious illnesses marked by severe disturbances in a person’s eating behaviors. Although many people may occasionally be concerned about their health, weight, or appearance, some become fixated or obsessed with weight loss, body weight or shape, and controlling their food intake. 

Common Signs of an Eating Disorder:

  • lack of appetite or interest in food 

  • dramatic weight loss

  • extreme concern with body size and shape 

  • stomach cramps 

  • sleep problems 

  • feeling cold all of the time

  • muscle weakness

  • extreme mood swings

Common Misconceptions about Eating Disorders

  • eating disorders are a choice or lifestyle

  • eating disorders are a way to get attention

  • eating disorders will go away on their own 

  • people with a "normal" body weight cannot have an eating disorder 

  • eating disorders aren't serious illnesses 

  • eating disorders are just about food
